Chapter 14: The Blade

Jingmo did not turn to the Council.

He turned to Yanzhi.

"Fox," he said, and then he stopped, and said, "Yanzhi."

The hall was so quiet that Yanzhi could hear the lamp oil hiss.

"Seven years ago I was nineteen, and the Warden had set me to guard the lower stream with a sword I could barely use."

"I heard the hounds first. Then a fox came down the slope, running low, and she was already dying."

"She had three arrows in her. One was in her throat, so that she could not change shape."

Yanzhi did not breathe.

"She saw me," said Jingmo.

"She stopped. She was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and the blood ran off her into the snow. I raised the sword."

"I thought I was going to do my duty."

"And?" said the oldest hall head, in a thin voice.

"She changed."

"She tore the arrow out of her own throat so that she could speak."

"She stood in front of me, a tall woman with leaves in her hair, and she asked me to kill her."

Yanzhi could hear his mother's voice, across all those years, saying exactly that.
