Chapter 15: What She Said

"Please," said Zhiyin again.

The snow had settled on his shaved head.

Yanzhi stood in the gate with the bell burning at his shoulder and the bead in his fist.

"Put it back on," said Zhiyin. "It's hurting you."

"I want it to hurt."

"That's stupid, and you're not stupid."

He took Yanzhi's wrist with his floury hand, pushed the bead into his palm and closed his fingers around it.

"Put it on, or I will tie it on you myself."

Yanzhi put it on.

The bell went quiet.

He hated it for going quiet.

"He copied these," said Zhiyin.

He had a bundle under one arm, wrapped in oilcloth, as thick as a roof tile.

He knelt in the snow and opened it.

There were sutra pages, hundreds of them, in small square brushwork.

Every sheet had a date at the corner, and a line under the date.

"Seven years," said Zhiyin. "One a day. It's two thousand, five hundred and fifty-five pages. I counted them last night."

"He does it before dawn, before the sweeping. I've seen his lamp."

Yanzhi took the top page.

The date was this morning.

Under it, in Jingmo's plain strong hand, were the words: For Hu Qingwan. May the river be near.

He took another, from the middle of the stack.
