Chapter 24: Peach Season
By the time the peaches came in, Jingmo's hair had grown back to a dark soft fuzz.
Yanzhi could not keep his hands off it.
"It's like a duckling," he said.
"It is hair."
"It is a duckling. It's a very large, very stern duckling."
"I will put you in the pond."
"You wouldn't."
Jingmo looked at him.
Yanzhi went to the pond voluntarily and sat on the bank with his feet in the water.
Jingmo sat beside him and said nothing, and his hand found the back of Yanzhi's neck and stayed there.
The orchard hung full that summer.
Every branch bent with fruit, gold-blushed and fat, smelling of honey and rain.
The novices had been sent in relays to pick before the wasps got them.
The wedding was on the first day of the harvest.
It was Zhiyin's idea.
"You can't just live in sin down the hill," he said, rolling out dough on a floury table the size of a boat.
"The abbot will be heartbroken. He's already ordered the red candles."
"We are not living in sin," said Yanzhi. "We are living in a leaking cottage."
"And you'll be married in it."
They were married under the biggest peach tree.
Cizhao officiated, in his best patched saffron, with a bowl of tea in one hand and a look of beatific, malicious glee on his face.
The eleven novices stood in a row holding paper lanterns.
The boy with the tooth, who had lost another one in the meantime, carried the rings on a plate.
Three old men in heavy robes sat at the back on folding stools.
One of them was weeping into a handkerchief with very little shame.
The old hunter had come, and stood by the wall in a clean coat, holding his hat.
Jingmo wore his plain grey robe, newly washed, with the black sash replaced by a red one.
