Chapter 10: The Boathouse
Saturday morning, the chain lay in the bed of Eero's truck under a tarp.
We had slept on the floor of his cabin by the wood stove, wrapped in one quilt.
In the grey light he drove down to the lake without saying where we were going.
He parked at the head of the dock.
The boathouse stood at the end of it, a weathered shed on pilings with a green door and a rowboat hanging from the rafters.
He lifted the chain out in both arms, and the links hung from him.
"What do you want to do with it?" he said.
"What do you want to do with it?"
He looked at the black water for a long time.
Then he walked to the end of the dock, lifted it over his head, and threw it as far as it would go.
It hit the lake with a flat cold splash, and sank.
He stood there with his empty hands open.
"Ninety years," he said.
"Not any more."
He turned around.
Something in his face had come loose.
He walked back down the dock toward me, slowly, and then not slowly.
I had time to say his name.
He picked me up under the arms, carried me through the green door of the boathouse, and kicked it shut.
