Chapter 12: The Moon
By six o'clock on Monday night, Birchwater Lodge held a hundred and four people, and not one of them was talking.
The great hall had been cleared down the middle.
Humans stood on one side, wolves on the other, and the hearth burned between them.
Through the tall windows the sky was the colour of a plum.
Eero stood at my left with his coat off, in a plain grey shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow.
His hand was around mine.
It was very hot, and it was shaking.
"Anja," he said, low. "If it goes wrong."
"It won't."
"If it does."
"Then I'll say it, and it'll work."
He looked down at me.
"You don't know that."
"I know you," I said. "That's enough."
I kissed him, there, in front of a hundred strangers, with the whole pack watching.
It was a short kiss.
It tasted like salt and fear, and he held on to my hand.
Ingrid stood on a chair by the hearth.
"Rite begins at moonrise," she said.
"Everyone keeps to the sides of the room, and nobody touches a wolf who hasn't been invited."
She looked straight at me.
"And nobody runs. A wolf chases what runs."
A murmur ran through the wolves along the wall.
