Chapter 7: The Big Screen

I didn't tell him about the letter that night.

I couldn't think of one way to say it that didn't sound insane.

Your mentor left you a secret letter, and I know because the air told me.

Instead I said, "Don't sign anything Gordon Slattery gives you."

He looked at me for a long time.

"All right," he said.

Then the driver drove me home again.

I worked the rest of the week at the desk on fifty-eight.

Margo brought in two forensic lawyers who didn't smile.

They put my name on a sworn statement about the yellow tabs and the coffee in bed, and they locked it in a safe.

"Now if they come for you," Margo said, "we were first."

On Friday she dropped an envelope on my desk.

Heavy cream card. Gold lettering.

The Slattery and Graves engagement celebration. Saturday. The Aurelia Grand Ballroom.

"I'm not going to that," I said.

"Lucian wants eyes on every Slattery VP in one room. You know their signatures better than they do." She pushed her glasses up. "And if you hide, you're the hotel girl forever."

I didn't own a single thing that wasn't for work.

So I wore my friend's dress.

It was gold satin, thin straps, cut on the bias, and it had been to exactly one wedding.

"You look like money," my friend said, pinning up my hair in my bathroom. "You look like somebody's going to regret something."

The Aurelia ballroom had four hundred people in it and roughly a million white roses.

A string quartet played something I half knew.

A giant screen over the stage was running a slideshow.

Bianca at five on a pony. Bianca at sixteen in Paris. Bianca and Lucian at a charity gala, not touching.
