Chapter 10: The Email

The email from the coordinator came at 4:05, which is the exact minute my session with Logan started.

I read it standing in the training room doorway with my hand on the light switch.

Subject line: Formal review scheduled, Monday, 9:00.

I read it twice.

Logan came in behind me and I put the phone in my pocket.

"You look like somebody died," he said.

"Nothing."

"Dana."

"Get on the table."

He got on the table.

I worked him for fifty minutes and I don't remember most of it.

He did the whole set. Nineteen reps and then twenty.

He didn't quit once and he didn't say anything about it.

At the end he sat up and looked at me.

"Something happened."

"Tell me."

"Not yet."

"Dana."

"Not yet."

He left at 5:30 and I locked the door behind him and sat down at the desk with my laptop.

I opened a new email.

I typed the coordinator's address.

Then I sat there with my hands on the keyboard.

I wrote it the first time like a resignation. I deleted it.

I wrote it the second time like a defense. I deleted that too.

The third time I wrote it plain.

Dear Coordinator. I am writing to withdraw from my placement with the men's hockey program, effective immediately.

I stopped there.

I read it three times.

Then I kept going.

I wrote that the decision was mine and had nothing to do with the player or his care.

I wrote that I appreciated the opportunity and that I would complete my hours through the general athletics rotation.

I wrote that I was sorry for any inconvenience.

I didn't send it.

I saved it as a draft.

Then I closed the laptop and sat in the empty training room for a while.
