Chapter 12: The Second Complaint

The coordinator called me back in Wednesday morning, alone this time.

Same conference room. Same window facing the parking lot.

She had my log printed out on the table with a pen beside it.

"Session nineteen," she said.

"Okay."

"April 9. Four-forty p.m. Right hip isometric, three sets of twelve. Door ajar."

"That's right."

"Ms. Mercer says you altered this entry."

"Altered it how."

"She says you wrote it after the fact to cover a re-injury."

I sat down.

"Session nineteen is the session he quit on rep seven and walked out."

"I know."

"He came back the next day and finished the set."

"That's session twenty."

"Then why is session nineteen logged as three sets of twelve."

"Because that's what I asked him to do. The log records the prescription."

"It doesn't record what he did."

"There's a notes column."

She turned the page and found it.

The notes column said: Pt. stopped at rep 7. Left room. Resumed next session.

"Huh," she said.

"That's been there since the ninth."

"Ms. Mercer says it was added later."

"How would she know."

"She says she has a photograph of the page from before."

"Do you have the photograph."

"No."

"Then how is this a complaint."

"Because she filed it and I have to run it."

She set the pen down.

"I've been doing this job eleven years," she said.

"In eleven years I have never had two complaints about one student in one month."

"Then you know what's happening."

"I know what it looks like. I can't act on what it looks like."

"I have the digital log. It's on the placement drive. Every entry auto-saves with a timestamp."

Her head came up.

"Say that again."

"The placement drive. It's a shared folder. It timestamps every save."

"Can you show me."

I opened my laptop on the table.

I pulled up the file and the revision history.

April 9, 4:47 p.m. Original entry.

April 9, 4:52 p.m. Notes column added.

April 16, 9:31 a.m. No changes.

April 22, 10:04 a.m. No changes.

The coordinator leaned in and read it.

Then she sat back.

"Okay," she said.

"Okay?"

"This complaint is dismissed."

She picked up the phone on the table and dialed.
