Chapter 9: The Terrace

"Jin Tianyu," said Mei, "is the politest man who ever burned a granary."

She slapped a dumpling into the steamer.

They were in the kitchen after supper, the three of them around the big table.

The fire was warm, and the dumplings smelled of ginger.

Captain Kuo had a dozen of them in front of him and was eating them two at a time.

"He thanked every family before he did it," Kuo said, through a full mouth.

"He bowed to the women and gave the children candy."

He swallowed.

"Then his soldiers put the whole village to the torch, because it had fed a demon courier."

"Haojing," said Mei. "Four hundred and fifty years ago. I was there, a girl selling radishes."

"You were there?" said Luan.

"I hid in a barrel."

Mei pushed another dumpling at Luan.

"He'll come with fifty golden soldiers, and he'll smile at you. You'll want to smile back. Don't."

"I don't smile at people," said Luan.

"That's why the Sovereign likes you," Kuo said. "You scowl like a cat at a wedding."

Mei laughed so hard she had to put down the ladle.

Luan ate the dumpling, and it was good.

For a moment the kitchen felt like a home she had been looking for her whole life.

Kuo wiped his beard.

"I'm saying this once, little ghost. If the Marshal asks for you, you don't go alone. I'll be outside the door."
