Chapter 15: The Moot Hears a King
Forty-one lords of Norvald sat on the benches of the great hall, and every one of them turned to look.
They had come for a feast and a vote.
They had woken to a half-dead priest, a barred gate and a duke who would not say why.
Elior walked the length of the hall with Teodric one step beside him.
He did not go up to the high table.
He stopped on the open flagstones where Rolf had been thrown down, and turned to face the benches.
"My lords," he said.
"I am Elior Maravelle.
"I was handed to you on the Silverwater bridge as a pledge.
"Last night I learned that I was not a pledge at all."
He held up his right hand.
The gold lion caught the light from the high windows.
"This is the signet of the kings of Savenne.
"My father wore it.
"My father is dead, and has been since the night of the Ford.
"The Lord Treasurer hid it and wrote letters in the dead king's name.
"Then he sent me north, so I could not be crowned.
