Chapter 19: Nine Hundred a Month
"Yes, sir," Costa said into the phone, in a voice I'd never heard. "I'll take it."
He hung up and sat in the armchair with me still in his lap, looking at the dark window.
"A desk and a classroom," he said. "Not a fire."
"Is that good?"
"It's a salary. It's January first." He swallowed. "It's the first thing in a year that's made me feel useful."
I kissed his temple.
"You were useful before."
"You're the only one who says so."
The next morning we sat at his long wooden table with a laptop, a calculator and the bank's pre-approval form.
I had put on a robe over nothing.
He had put on nothing over nothing, and I'd made him wear sweatpants for the sake of the math.
"Four hundred thousand," Costa said, typing. "Forty down. The bank wants the loan to cost about twenty-nine hundred a month with taxes and insurance."
"And right now?"
"We pay two thousand. A thousand each."
"So we need nine hundred more a month."
"Nine hundred."
"With your January salary."
"The bank won't count a salary I don't have yet. They'll want a letter. And they'll want yours, too, and a freelancer's letter is a coin toss."
