Chapter 7: Twenty-Five Notes

I told him about the notes on Wednesday night, in his bed, with my head on his chest.

I hadn't planned to.

His bedroom was the one directly under mine.

I lay there looking at his ceiling and thinking how many times I had sat on the other side of it.

A small crack ran across the plaster, right where the grate sat.

It was the only thing in the room that looked old.

"There's something I want to show you," I said.

"If it's in the closet, I'm not going near it."

"Funny."

"I'm not joking. You shut a man in a closet and he never leaves."

I smiled against his skin.

"It's the notes," I said. "On my door."

His heartbeat stayed even.

His hand, which had been stroking my back, stopped.

"What about them?"

"I told you there's an admirer."

"You told Shannon."

"Same thing." I propped myself up on one elbow. "I've never told anyone how many there are."

"How many?"

"Enough that I know when one is gone."

He sat up so fast that I slid off him.

"Someone was in your apartment?"

"Probably Chandler, with his key. Or Loretta." I waved a hand. "I'm not scared. I just want it back. It was my favorite."

"Why?"

I took a breath.
