Chapter 8: Master Key
Chandler stood at my counter with the shoebox open in front of him and one yellow note held up between two fingers.
"These are adorable," he said. "Somebody's got a crush."
My stomach went cold and then hot.
"Put it down."
"I'm checking for a lease violation."
"There's no lease clause about notes."
"There's a clause about harassment of tenants," he said, smooth as butter. "I'd call this borderline."
"It's a love letter, not a threat. And you're in my kitchen."
"I'm the manager."
"You are in my kitchen without notice at seven in the morning."
He put the note down and spread his hands, smiling.
"Molly. Let's be adults. I like you. I always have."
I laughed.
I couldn't help it.
"You called me big girl and told me my floor was sagging."
"That was a joke."
"It was an insult."
"It was affection."
He stepped around the counter, and I did not move.
"I'm a big fan of women with your, you know, personality. And I can make this noise thing disappear. All it takes is dinner."
"You're blackmailing me for dinner."
"I'm inviting you to dinner. Don't be dramatic."
I took one step toward him.
He's six feet tall, and I'm five foot four, but he leaned back.
"I'm going to say this once," I said.
"I have a recording of you on my phone. You said 'dinner' and 'noise thing' in the same sentence."
I did not have a recording.
His face went pale.
"You wouldn't."
"I narrate for a living, Chandler. I know exactly how a confession sounds."
