Chapter 25: The Seat
The boardroom of Merriman Health occupied the fortieth floor, with a table the length of a bowling lane.
Twelve directors sat along it on Monday morning in dark suits, looking at nothing.
At the head of the table sat an empty chair that still had Lucinda's reading glasses folded on its blotter.
I walked in with Maybelle on my left and Raylan on my right.
Every director's eyes went to my silver-lilac hair and then politely away.
"Ms. Calhoun," said the gray-suited man at the foot of the table.
He was the family attorney, the same man who had walked out of Raylan's keynote with his jacket buttoned.
"Thank you for coming," he said. "The board has been convened to settle the matter of the Merriman Family Trust."
He slid a folder down the table, and it stopped in front of me.
"Under the terms of the trust, a blood heir inherits the family office, a seat on this board and the Merriman name."
"I know the terms," I said.
"The board is prepared to confirm you today. Mr. Merriman has offered to step aside."
