Chapter 10: The Sewing Basket

Sorrel went down to breakfast in a clean gown and found the whole household already waiting.

The steward had told them.

The cooks stood along the wall, the guards stood behind the chairs, and the lord from Thornhall sat at the table with his pen out and dark rings under his eyes.

Edmund sat beside him, pale and straight.

Linden sat at the far end with a cup of tea, and she looked up with a bright worried smile.

"Sorrel! How is he? We've been so afraid."

"He's alive."

"Oh, thank the stars." Linden put a hand to her heart. "I kept thinking, what if I'd poured him the wrong wine? I was so nervous. I never serve at a table."

It was a small thing to say, and it was the wrong thing.

Everyone had drunk from that one jug, and only the king's cup had held anything else.

Sorrel had told nobody that.

She sat down across from her sister and folded her hands.

"Linden, I'd like to see your sewing basket."

The smile stayed on.

"My basket? It's only thread."

"Then it won't take long."

"Sorrel, it's upstairs, and it's private. It has my ribbons in it, and my..." Linden gave a little laugh. "My woman's things."

"Captain."

The guard captain with the scarred chin stepped away from the wall.

"It's under the bed in the south room," Sorrel said. "Bring it down."

"You can't," Linden said, and her voice cracked in the middle.

"Why not?"

"Because it's mine!"

Nobody in the room moved.

She had not raised her voice since she was nine years old.

The captain went out.

Linden sat very straight and pressed her palms to her cheeks, and Edmund looked at the wall.

The basket came down in the captain's hands a few minutes later.
