Chapter 17: Everything She Has

Ronan Aldermere had flown into the Ashfall war with a lance in his hand.

He had never been as afraid as he was in his own bedroom with the door shut.

Sorrel sat on the edge of the bed in her shift with her hair down, waiting.

"Tell me what it costs," she said.

"You heard her."

"I heard a woman who wanted me to stop sitting beside you. I want it from you."

He stood at the cold hearth with his back to her.

"There is a book in the Stone cellar," he said. "My grandfather's grandfather wrote it."

"The last king who called his dragon through his mate put her blood on the Stone and held on to her while he rose."

"And?"

"She lived. She never walked again." His voice was flat. "The bond runs both ways, and a dragon is a great deal of fire. It takes what it needs from whoever is nearest, and the nearest is the one who is bleeding."

Sorrel was quiet.

"Then I'll be careful," she said.

"No."

"Ronan..."

"No." He turned around. "I have been a ruined man for six years. I can be one for sixty more."

"I have a wing and I can walk. Let the council name Edmund regent, and I will find another way to take it back."

"There is no other way, and you know it," Sorrel said. "Helene told you in front of thirty lords."
