Chapter 11: Visiting Hours
My mother didn't come.
"He asked for you," she said at the door, holding her cardigan closed. "He's never once asked for me. Go."
Frankie drove.
She didn't ask if I wanted her to.
She just took Pop's keys off the hook and got behind the wheel of the tow truck in her dress.
The hospital in Royal Oak was twenty minutes up Woodward.
We passed Hensley Chevrolet on the way, lit up.
Frankie parked in the garage.
"I'll be right here," she said.
"It could be hours."
"Then I'll be right here for hours."
The neuro floor was on six.
I heard Carter before I saw him.
He was standing outside a corner room in a navy suit with two older men in gray ones.
Penrose Holdings executives, by the look of them.
Blair was beside him in a camel coat.
She was holding a coffee in her left hand.
There was a diamond on that hand the size of a tooth.
Carter saw me coming down the hall and stepped in front of the door.
"No," he said.
"He asked for me."
"He's had a stroke. He doesn't know what he's asking for." He turned to the nurses' station. "Can somebody call security, please? This man isn't family."
The nurse at the desk looked up.
"Sir?"
"He sells used cars on Eight Mile," Carter said, loud enough for the whole hall. "He's been harassing my family for months. He's here because he thinks there's money in that room."
One of the executives looked me up and down.
My Eight Mile Motor polo. My work jeans. Grease under my nails.
He believed every word.
"I'm his grandson," I said.
Carter laughed.
