Chapter 15: The Auction
The dealer auction ran every Tuesday in a warehouse out by the airport.
In February it was the coldest building in Michigan.
Three hundred dealers in Carhartt jackets stood on the concrete with coffee, watching cars roll through four lanes under the lights.
The auctioneer sat up in a booth and talked faster than anybody I've ever heard.
Frankie had been coming since she was twelve.
She knew every regular by his truck.
"You see the guy in the orange hat?" she said. "He'll bid on anything with a Ford badge. The two brothers by the pillar only buy Hondas. Don't fight them."
"Who do we fight?"
She nodded at lane one.
Carter stood in front of it in a camel overcoat with four men from Penrose Auto behind him.
He had a bidder's badge clipped to his lapel.
Every dealer in the room was watching him.
The first car through lane one was a clean silver Malibu.
I raised my hand at forty-two hundred.
Carter raised his at five thousand.
The room murmured.
That Malibu was worth six on a good day, retail.
"Fifty-five," I said.
"Seven," Carter said.
I put my hand down.
He bought it for seven thousand dollars.
He turned around and found me in the crowd and smiled with all of his teeth.
The next car was a Taurus.
Same thing.
Then an Equinox. Then a Camry.
Every time I bid, Carter bid two thousand over.
He didn't look at the cars.
He looked at me.
By ten o'clock he had bought eleven cars and paid retail plus for every one of them.
The dealers had started to enjoy it.
The two Honda brothers were taking bets.
"He's going to buy every car you look at," Frankie said. "Forever."
"Then I'll look at the right one."
