Chapter 19: The Squeeze

Doug sat down on the bumper of a Civic like his legs had quit.

Our customers were still all around us with paper plates of sheet cake.

His own former salesman stood ten feet away with a grease pencil in his hand.

Doug didn't seem to see any of them.

"All of it," he said. "Every floor-plan line I've got. Carter's bank bought the paper in July. I didn't even know. Sixty days."

"How much?"

"Thirty-one million."

Frankie let out a low whistle.

"That's a lot of Kias," she said.

Doug looked up at her like he'd forgotten she could talk.

Then he looked at me.

"You know the old man," he said. "I don't know how. I don't care anymore. He looked at you at that wedding like you were the only person on the lawn."

"Mr. Hensley."

"Talk to him. Tell him to call off his grandson. Carter wants my stores for his Penrose Auto, and he's going to take them unless somebody stops him."

He wiped his face with his hand.

"Please," he said.

I had never heard Doug Hensley say please.
