Chapter 22: The Will
The Penrose boardroom was on the forty-first floor of a black glass tower downtown.
You could see the whole river from it, and Canada on the other side.
There was a table long enough to land a plane on.
Carter sat at the head of it.
He had taken his grandfather's chair.
Blair sat at his right hand in a black dress, no veil today.
Doug and Mrs. Hensley sat beside her, in the seats you give family.
Down the length of the table were the board, a dozen men and women in gray, with their hands folded.
Along the back wall stood the press.
Six reporters, two cameras, a photographer from the Free Press.
My mother sat at the far end of the table, in her good black coat.
I sat beside her in Pop's suit.
Frankie sat beside me in jeans and a blazer, because she said she'd worn enough dresses for one winter.
Carter watched us come in and didn't stand.
"Aunt," he said. "Theo. Miss Doyle. I'm glad you could make it."
"We were invited," my mother said.
"By a dying man." He smiled at the reporters. "Let's be generous."
The lawyer came in at exactly ten o'clock.
