Chapter 24: Odometers

By seven the next morning there were forty people outside our gate.

Some had signs.

SCAM. GIVE BACK OUR MONEY. EVERY LIE TOLD.

Two news vans were parked on the shoulder of Eight Mile with their masts up.

Across the road, Penrose Auto had a banner going up over the doors.

GRAND RELAUNCH SATURDAY. UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP: CARTER PENROSE.

Frankie stood beside me at the office window with her coffee going cold.

"He got fired on Thursday," she said. "And he bought the superstore off his own company on Friday."

"With what?"

"With whatever the bank hasn't taken yet."

Pop was in his chair by the door, with a blanket and his cane, glaring through the glass at the crowd.

"Let me go out there," he said.

"No," Frankie and I said together.

I opened the gate at eight, like always.

The crowd surged up to the fence.

A man with a sign shouted, "How many did you roll back?"

A woman shouted, "My son bought a Focus from you!"

Then a voice from the back cut through all of them.

"Oh, hush!"

The old woman in the church hat pushed her way to the front with her Impala keys in her fist.

"I bought a car off this boy two years ago," she said. "It's got every mile it came with and four new tires he didn't owe me. Hush, all of you, and let him talk."
