Chapter 32: Three Years
Frankie came down the steel stairs in my shirt and her work boots and nothing else that I could see.
I came down behind her.
The nurse handed us each a coffee.
"Wedding present," she said, and patted the hood of the Soul. "Well. This is the wedding present. The coffee's just coffee."
"You're giving us the Kia?"
"I'm bringing her home." She looked at the car the way some people look at a dog. "Three hundred thousand miles. Night shifts, two moves, my daughter learned to drive in it. The radio still only gets AM."
"Polka?" I said.
"Every station's polka if you believe hard enough."
Frankie walked around the car slowly.
She crouched by the back wheel.
"Rear brakes," she said.
"He told me they'd need pads by fall," the nurse said. "That was three falls ago. I've done them twice." She grinned at me. "Every flaw told. You were the first man who ever told me what was wrong with something before I paid for it."
She hugged Frankie.
She hugged me.
Then she walked down Eight Mile to the bus stop in her scrubs, without looking back at the car.
Frankie and I stood on the empty lot in the morning sun, among the folding chairs, with our coffee.
