"I'm Linnea Haugland," I said.
Footsteps crossed the lobby, short and fast, with the scuff of a woman who has stood on concrete floors for forty years.
She stopped close enough that I smelled laundry soap and cold air.
"I'm Jonas's mother."
"I heard it on the radio in the truck."
"Heard what he told this whole building."
"Mrs. Tallgren."
"Don't."
Her hand hit my cheek.
It was not a hard slap.
It was the slap of a woman who has waited thirteen years to use her arm.
I did not step back.
"Your people killed my husband," she said.
"Your people paid me to shut up about it."
"And now my boy has gone and put himself in a cell for yours."
"He fired at the man who had my father by the throat," I said.
"My father is the one who buried the report."
"I know what my father did."
"He's dead, and I can't make him sit in this room."
"So I'm the one you get."
She breathed hard.
