Chapter 6: The Question
A woman in a black dress stood at the end of my table, holding the wireless microphone the Foundation used for questions.
I held out my hand for it.
She looked at Gordon, and then at my face, and gave it to me.
"Gill," Gordon said from the stage, still smiling. "Sit down, sweetheart. We're not doing questions yet."
"I only have one," I said, and my voice came out of every speaker in the room.
Three hundred people went quiet.
I walked into the aisle between the round tables, with the pearls at my throat and the cream paper with the four sentences folded in my other hand.
I didn't look at it.
"Thank you for having me," I said. "I was told to say that. I was told to say I'm grateful to the Hollister family."
Adele's smile stayed where it was.
"I'm not a girl they took in. I'm Gordon and Adele Hollister's daughter."
A glass clinked somewhere and went silent.
"Twenty years ago two babies were born at Cedars-Sinai on the same night. The wrong one went home with this family."
I turned toward the head table.
"Camille is that one."
Somebody laughed, a short, startled laugh, and then stopped it.
"That's absurd," said Gordon. He was standing now. "My daughter has had a very difficult week. Somebody turn that microphone off."
A man in a headset began to run toward the back.
"It was a blood test," I said, louder. "Six weeks ago. Ask the family doctor who ran it. I was folding towels at a laundromat in Bakersfield, and they came and got me."
