Chapter 16: The Second Swab
Mr. Brightwell did not send Lorna away.
I had wanted him to, all through the dark hours of Sunday, and he didn't.
He sat in a kitchen chair at the cottage with his hands between his knees.
"A voice on a dock is not a laboratory," he said.
"Raymond," said Joanne.
"I am not saying she's innocent."
"I am saying I have been wrong in front of my whole company, and I will not be wrong twice because I was angry."
"I will decide on paper."
He looked at me.
"Monday," he said. "And I'll pay whatever the lab charges to have it in two days, not ten."
It was the first thing he'd done that I could respect.
Lorna went back to the Westport house in the taxi, with her mouth shut tight, and did not say goodbye.
The family doctor's office was a brick house on a Westport side street.
