Chapter 11: Say My Name

The knock came at midnight, while rain beat on the roof of Kellaway House.

Iris opened the bedroom door in a loose gray shirt and found Dane in the corridor, standing exactly three feet from the threshold, with a small black phone in his hand.

"You told me to answer every question," he said. "You haven't asked this one yet, so I'm answering it before it's too late."

He played her father's voice.

She listened to all of it, standing in the doorway, with her arms wrapped around herself.

*Sylvia has been putting something in it for weeks.*

When the recording stopped, she did not move.

"He knew," she said.

"He knew."

"And I was planning a wedding in the next room."

Her voice cracked on the last word, and then she was crying, hard and silent, with her hand over her mouth.

Dane did not step closer.

"Tell me what to do," he said. "I'll do whatever it is."

Iris wiped her face with her wrist.

"Come in," she said. "And close the door."

He came in.

He closed it, and stood against it with his hands at his sides.

"Three feet," he said, hoarsely.

"I'm changing the rule."

She crossed the room.

She stood in front of him, close enough to feel the heat of his body through his shirt, and looked up into his face.

Rain ran down the window behind her.

"I need to put my hands on someone who isn't lying to me," Iris said. "Tonight it's you."

"Iris."

"I'm sober. I know who you are. I know exactly what you did." She laid her palm against his chest, over the hard beat of his heart. "Look at me. Touch me back, and when I say stop, you stop. That's all I'm asking."

His eyes closed.

When they opened again they were wet.

"I will," he said. "I swear to God."

She kissed him.

It was nothing like the dinner table.

She dragged his head down with both hands and took his mouth hard, and he made a sound that went straight through her.

His hands came up slowly and settled on her waist.
