Chapter 5: Interview Room
By nine the next morning Dane Fairweather was under arrest.
Iris learned it from Odette, who read it off her phone at the kitchen table without sitting down.
"Sexual assault, first degree. The prosecutor's office filed overnight."
"I only reported it yesterday," Iris said.
"Someone helped it along."
Dane had slept two hours in a kitchen chair with his coat folded over his knees.
He had left at dawn to turn himself in, before the police could come for him.
He had not asked her to go with him.
Iris took the hotel folder from the counter and put it in her bag.
"I'll drive you," Daphne said from the doorway, already in her coat. "You shouldn't go alone."
"Thank you."
Odette watched Daphne pick up the car keys and said nothing at all.
The precinct smelled of burnt coffee and wet wool.
In the front hall a man in a gray suit with a leather briefcase stood by the desk, talking to the desk sergeant in the easy voice of a man who came often.
Iris knew him by the card he had held out in the hospital.
"Ms. Kellaway." He smiled. "The trustee asked me to see that this is handled properly. You've been very brave. Mr. Fairweather has confirmed everything."
"Confirmed what?"
"His statement. It's all in order." He opened the briefcase and showed her the first page.
It was Dane's handwriting.
*I went to room 1412 on my own. I drank at the party and I knew what I was doing. I take full responsibility for what happened to Iris Kellaway.*
