Chapter 14: The Atrium

The emergency doctor came out into the corridor with her mask pulled down and her hands in her pockets.

"A small stroke," she said. "Left side. She's awake in and out, and she's stable."

I had been standing for an hour with Hester's pearls in my fist.

They had been cut off her throat in the ambulance.

"Can she talk?"

"A little. She asked for her driver."

"Then she asked me what day it was, and told me I had lovely posture."

Tobias made a noise that was half a laugh and half something else.

"That's her," he said. "That's all her."

"Rest is the only treatment tonight," the doctor said. "No stress. No visitors outside the family."

"I'm family."

"Then you can sit with her."

I went in and sat.

My grandmother lay small and gray against the pillow, with a clip on her finger and the cane propped against the rail.

She did not wake.

I held her hand, which was cool and dry and weighed nothing.

I had not forgiven her.

I held it anyway.

At midnight a nurse put her head around the curtain.
