Chapter 20: Low Tide
"Your husband," I said.
"My husband." She smiled at the doors. "Lance will make a lovely chairman."
The doors opened on the lobby.
Dina was standing right outside them with her phone held up.
Lance's mother walked past her into the flash of a dozen cameras and didn't break stride.
"What did she say?" Dina hissed.
"It's a war," I said. "Off the record."
The terminal had found out by lunch.
The ticket booth lady came out of her booth and hugged me without a word, and then smacked my arm.
"Five years, honey. You let me lend you bus money."
The fish market lady just pointed at me across the pier with a crab claw.
"I knew it," she yelled. "Yellow raincoat! I knew it!"
After my last run I didn't want to go home.
I walked out along the Salt Pier in the dark.
Low tide. The pier smelled like salt and creosote and old rope.
There was a light moving underneath it.
I leaned over the rail.
"Hello?"
The light swung up into my face.
"Captain," said Rem. "You're blinding a man."
