Briony could not make her mouth work.
Clem stood in the grey hall with a flat bundle pressed against her ribs, wrapped in a shawl.
Her hands shook around it.
Behind Briony, the window creaked.
Sevrin had stopped with one boot on the sill, and he was not coming in and not leaving.
"Inside," Briony said to Clem.
"Now, before anyone's door opens."
Clem came in and shut it herself.
She did not look at the man by the window.
She sat on the edge of the narrow bed and laid the bundle across her knees.
"I'm not going to talk," she said.
"You won't believe me if I talk.
Read it."
She unwrapped the shawl.
Under it lay a stack of pages tied with a green ribbon, written close on both sides in Clem's neat copyist's hand.
Briony took the top sheet and her knees folded.
She sat down hard beside Clem on the bed.
It was not written in the letters of Merrowen.
It was the script of her old life, and she had not seen it in this kingdom once.
The title at the top read Lanternlight Court.
