Chapter 7: The Room Above the Stable
"No," Briony said.
"No one.
I had a bad dream and I opened the window for air."
Clem looked at her a moment longer.
"All right," she said.
She picked the black cravat up off the pillow and folded it once.
She set it on the nightstand where it couldn't be missed.
"You should keep that somewhere safe.
It's good silk."
She went to the door.
"The steward at the east gate is worth a second look, you know," Clem said over her shoulder.
"Under-steward Dray.
Quiet.
Serious.
He's much kinder than he looks."
"I never said anything about a steward."
"No," said Clem.
"You didn't."
She smiled, a small tired smile, and closed the door.
Briony sat very still in the dark.
Nobody in this palace knew the under-steward's name.
He was a coat at a door.
She had said it to herself in the game for ninety hours, and she had never once said it to Clem.
She told herself it was gossip.
The palace ran on gossip.
She told herself that all through breakfast, and through a morning of fetching ink, and straight up to noon.
At noon she stopped telling herself anything, and went to the east stable.
