Chapter 13: Why He Walked
Nobody moved for a full second.
Then the whole room spoke at once.
"Sit down, Captain," Prescott said, over the noise. "This is not the forum."
"It's exactly the forum," Henrik said. "You called it."
I stood up beside him.
My knees were shaking, but my voice came out steady, hard and set.
"Why?"
Henrik turned his head.
"You saw the ice and you walked onto it," I said.
"In front of forty people who trust you."
"I want the reason now, with everyone here."
"Hanna, not like this."
"You picked the room, Henrik. You said it out loud. Now finish."
The coach folded his arms and said nothing, which meant he wanted to hear it too.
Henrik looked at the screen, where the last frame still froze the tunnel and the wet shine on the floor.
"Trent was ten feet behind me," he said. "Running. Stick up, eyes forward, like always."
"So?"
"So he was going first."
"He always does when I'm late."
"He'd have hit that sheet at full speed and gone headfirst into the boards."
