Chapter 23: Delphine
The owner didn't use his boardroom after all.
At ten o'clock on Monday morning, he came down to the lower level of the training center.
He sat on a stool in my kitchen.
He was seventy-one, with a white scarf and a cane, and he had never once been in this room.
He had told sixty people from the front office to meet him there, and they stood along the steel counters in their lanyards, whispering.
Hank was by the walk-in with his arms crossed.
Pavel sat on a flour bin, and Doran stood at my side, as silent as a wall.
I held my ladle in front of me because I had been told to.
Delphine Hartley came in last, in a black suit, with her binder under her arm.
She walked to the middle of the room and stopped when she saw the owner on his stool.
"Sir," she said. "I assumed we were in the boardroom."
"We're in the kitchen," he said. "Put the binder on the table."
She set it on my prep table, square to the edge.
"I read it twice," said the owner.
"I read it once on Saturday night."
"I read it again at four in the morning, because the first time I thought I'd misunderstood."
