Chapter 24: Table for Two
At seven o'clock on Monday night, the dining room in the brick house had candles in it.
It also had a table I had never seen him use.
It was a long oak table with two places set at one end, side by side.
Doran stood at the head of it in a white shirt, holding a plate.
His sleeves were rolled up over the lake on his arm.
"I cooked," he said.
"You cooked?"
"I made a grilled cheese. It's the only thing I know how to make."
I looked at the plate.
One side of the sandwich was perfectly gold, and the other side was black.
"It's burnt," I said.
"It's deliberate. You like a crust."
"I like a crust that's brown."
"Then eat the brown side."
I laughed so hard I had to put my hand on the back of a chair.
He pulled the chair out for me, and I sat.
He sat down on my left, with his knee against my knee.
He cut the sandwich in two with the side of his fork.
He gave me the better half.
We ate in the candlelight, and he watched me chew with the open, hungry look of a man at his first dinner party.
"It's terrible," I said, with my mouth full.
"Is it?"
"It's the best one I've ever had."
He put down his half of the sandwich.
