Chapter 9: Not Her Type

I told Tori the truth at one in the morning, sitting on her kitchen floor with a bag of frozen peas on my sore tailbone.

She had opened the door in her Sullivan shirt and taken one look at my face.

"What did he do?"

"Nothing. That's the problem."

I pulled in a long breath and said the crazy thing in one go.

"I can hear his thoughts. Since Tuesday. Only his, only when he's close."

Tori said nothing for a long time.

Then she took the peas from me, put them back on the correct spot, and sat down on the linoleum across from me.

"Okay. Prove it."

"How?"

"Tell me what he's thinking right now."

"He's in the rink. I'm in your kitchen."

"Then tell me what he thought last night."

I told her.

I gave her every line I could remember, word for word, the star clips and the lunch for two and the packet and the strawberry cake.

When I got to the end she had her fist against her mouth.

"And you think those were about me," she said.

"Who else?"

"Lila."

"You wear the clips. You're always with me. You're the one at the table with him."

"Did he say my name? Even once?"

I thought about it.

"No. Just she. Her."

Tori squeezed her eyes shut and made a small, strangled noise.

I understood that she was holding in a secret.

I just didn't understand which one.

"I swear on this shirt," she said, taking hold of the Sullivan 17, "that Mason Doyle does not think about me. He thinks about someone else. And I'm not going to tell you who."
