Chapter 10: Not for Sale

Johnny didn't say anything for a long moment.

Then he took his glove off the door.

"Go home," he told the security man. "Don't go upstairs first."

The man went.

The captain looked at Johnny. Then at me. Then at the strawberry shake in the backup goalie's hand.

"We didn't hear anything," the captain said.

"Nothing," said the backup goalie. "I was drinking."

They walked back to the locker room shoulder to shoulder.

Johnny turned to me in the empty tunnel.

His eyes were wet. He didn't wipe them.

"He knew," he said. "Five years. He knew she existed, and he let you do it alone."

"That's who he is."

"He signed me." He laughed, horrible and short. "He bought me. He hung my face on the building. Knowing."

"Johnny."

"I'm going up there in the morning."

I should have told him not to.

"I'm coming with you," I said instead.

At eight the next morning we walked into the owner's suite together.

My father was at his desk.

Kinsley was perched on the arm of the leather sofa in a cream sweater, scrolling.

The general manager was standing by the window with a folder, mid-meeting.

My father's assistant hurried in behind us.

"I'm so sorry, Mr. Vanderhoff, they didn't..."

"It's fine," my father said. He didn't look surprised. "Sit down, both of you."

Nobody sat.

Johnny walked up to the glass desk and put both hands on it.

"I'm not Kinsley's boyfriend," he said.

Kinsley looked up from her phone.

"I've never been her boyfriend. I'm not going to her events. I'm not posing for her pictures. If she puts her mouth on me again, I'll file a complaint with the league."

"Johnny," Kinsley said, with a little laugh. "Babe. Calm down."

He didn't look at her.

"And I know what you did in Chicago," he told my father.
