Chapter 24: The Clause

"He didn't read it," I repeated.

"He read the money." Johnny grinned. "Eight years, eighty-eight million. He signed every page in blue ink and never turned to page thirty-one."

"What's on page thirty-one?"

"Me. Saying no."

He fumbled one-handed for his phone on the tray table.

"Call my agent. He's in my favorites. He's under AGENT, because I'm a simple man."

I found it. It was midnight. The agent picked up on the first ring anyway.

I put him on speaker.

"I just watched it," the agent said. "Are you okay? Is the arm okay?"

"The arm's fine. Read him the clause," Johnny said. "Read it to Leighton. Slowly."

Papers rustled on the other end.

"Full no-trade protection for the length of the contract," the agent read. "The player may not be traded, loaned or assigned to any club without his written consent."

"And if the team itself moves?" I asked.

A pause.

"Then he goes with it, or he sits out his contract unpaid. That part, nobody can write a clause about."

Johnny looked at me.

"Okay," he said. "Thanks. Go to bed."
