Chapter 31: Director

Johnny didn't take the watch.

He stood on the sidewalk and looked at it in his mother's hand.

"Ma. You said you'd keep it."

"I said I'd keep it until I knew where it went." She pushed it at him. "Now I know. Take it before I cry on the street. The neighbors will talk."

He took it.

Above us, a window banged open.

"NONNA!"

Lulu came down the stairs in her goalie pajamas so fast Stevie had to run after her with a spatula.

She hit her grandmother at full speed. The bakery bag went flying.

Johnny caught it one-handed.

"Cannoli," his mother said, into Lulu's hair. "For breakfast. Don't tell your mother."

"I'm standing right here," I said.

"You're too thin. You have two."

We ate cannoli at my kitchen table at nine in the morning.

Stevie had three and said she'd run it off, and didn't.

Then Johnny got down off his chair and knelt on the kitchen floor beside Lulu.

He had the watch in his hand.

"This was my dad's," he said. "Your grandpa's. The one in the fire helmet on Nonna's fridge."
