Chapter 32: The Ice
Johnny held the whistle up between us.
The ring turned slowly on its purple ribbon.
"I had a speech," he said. "The captain helped me write it. It was very long."
"I forgot all of it," he said. "So here's the short one."
The kitchen was dead silent.
"I don't want to be somebody you have to count on," he said. "I want to be somebody you get to. Every morning. At the breakfast table, where she can see."
My eyes were already gone. I didn't bother with them.
"Leighton Vanderhoff. Will you marry me?"
Lulu couldn't hold it.
"SAY YES," she shrieked through her fingers. "Mommy, it's rule FIVE. YOU SAY."
The whole kitchen broke.
I knelt down on the tiles in front of him, so we were eye to eye, the way I did with her.
"Yes," I said. "I say yes."
He untied the ring from the whistle with shaking fingers and put it on mine.
Then Stevie took her whistle back, put it in her mouth and blew it so hard the backup goalie dropped his plate.
We got married on the ice two weeks later.
It was the last Saturday in June. The Glacier Center was ours for one afternoon, because the new owner said so.
