Chapter 21: Neither Takes It Back
The horn was not Fu's.
It was the Throne's own guard, two hundred men in white armor.
They came up the stairs of the Southern Gate with Qin Shu running at their head.
He had a split lip and a bandage on his arm.
He stopped dead at the top, saw what was on the parapet, and turned a very deep red.
"The Emperor heard," he panted, to the sky.
"He has confined Marshal Fu to the barracks."
"The blades will be shown at this gate at dawn, a day early."
"Then we have the night," said Mo.
The captain of the guard took one look at the white hair, and at the Marshal wrapped in a robe.
He gave them the Throne's guest pavilion, a door, and a promise that nobody would knock.
The pavilion stood alone on a spur of cloud with a pond in front of it and a single wide bed inside.
Mo carried Han through the door and shut it with his heel.
"I can walk," Han said.
"I know."
He set him down on the bed anyway, and stood over him, breathing hard.
Neither of them had said it yet.
Not since the door of the tomb, not since the Court, not since the knife.
"Zhaohe," Mo said. "I have something to say, and I want to say it with my hands."
He stripped off the robe, and Han's body in it was marked with bruises, a cut and the old scar.
Mo knelt on the bed and put his palm over the cut.
"The heart in your chest was mine," he said. "I gave it to you."
"I swear I will never take it back. Not when I am dying, not when I am angry, not in a thousand years."
Han's throat worked.
He reached out, took Mo's hand, and set it on his own chest, and then laid his other palm on Mo's.
"The heart in your chest was mine," Han said.
