Chapter 14: Martin's Office
"Then file it," I said to the lawyer. "I'll answer every line."
"You're not afraid of it?"
"I'm afraid of a lot of things this week. Your client's complaint is not one of them."
She left her card on the table.
I didn't pick it up.
The chairman was waiting in the corridor with two board members, and none of them looked happy with me.
"Martin has asked for ten minutes," the chairman said. "Alone with you."
"No."
"He says he has something you'll want."
"Then I'll hear it with you three standing outside the door."
The chairman's mouth twitched, which was the closest he came to approval.
Martin Soames had already packed half his glass office into cardboard boxes.
The loud yellow tie was gone, and so was most of his color.
He sat behind his empty desk with one hand resting on a green cloth ledger.
