Chapter 19: The Vote

At nine the next morning, the boardroom had one extra row of chairs.

I had asked the fourteen to come, and I hadn't expected any of them to.

Ten did.

The man with the dishwasher was in the second row, in a borrowed tie.

The woman who had cried was beside him, holding her husband's hand.

The lobby guard stood against the back wall in his dress uniform, because he said he didn't know where else to put himself.

Cullen sat at my left with a stack of pages on his knee.

He hadn't touched me since the doors opened, and I could feel exactly where he wasn't.

"This is irregular," said the man with the cuff links.

"It's a board meeting," I said. "The people who were harmed are allowed to watch it."

The chairman rapped the table once.

"Ms. Thwaite has the floor for ten minutes."

I didn't use all of them.

I stood and told seven people in suits what I had done.

I said the fault was mine, and that I was saying it first.

I said that for four months, fourteen people had thought nobody cared, and that I was the reason they were right.
