Chapter 12: Forty-Four
I tapped the little gray circle.
The profile opened.
Account created October 26, 11:52 p.m.
Two minutes after I posted Day 1.
Three hundred and eighteen comments.
Every single one of them was on my thread.
I scrolled.
"Whoever he is, he's an idiot if he lets you stop."
"Rule 2 is the dumbest one."
"Go back to the shop. He's waiting."
"Because I'd be waiting."
"Did you eat the sandwiches?"
He'd made the sandwiches.
He'd made them, and walked back to the shop, and typed on this iPad, he'd want to know.
The bell clanked.
Knox came in with a box of needles under one arm and the first snow of the year in his beard.
"Hey," he said, surprised and happy. "The kid called you? I'm sorry, he panics..."
He saw my face.
He saw the iPad.
He put the box down on the counter very slowly.
In the back, the apprentice's machine stopped buzzing.
"Is this you?" I said.
I turned the screen around so he could see it.
He didn't look at the screen. He looked at me.
"Yes."
"Since when?"
"Since the first night."
"How?"
"You left the laptop open on your table. I got up for water." He swallowed. "I saw the moose with its back turned on the edge of a bed. I'd know your moose anywhere, Annika. I'd know it from across a parking lot."
"So you knew."
"I knew."
"The whole time. Every day. You read me telling forty thousand strangers that I was scared you'd leave me." My voice was climbing and I couldn't stop it. "And you got into bed next to me every night and said nothing."
"I said something every night," he said. "Just not to you."
"Don't you dare be sweet right now."
The client in the back chair was very carefully looking at the ceiling.
