Chapter 5: Inga's Intervention

"No," I said. "No. You didn't do anything."

"You'd tell me."

"I'd tell you."

He looked at me for a long moment in the streetlight.

I'm a terrible liar. I go pink from the collarbones up. It was dark, and I was very grateful for the dark.

"Okay," he said finally.

He got up, pulled back his side of the covers, and got under them.

He didn't come over the line.

He fell asleep with one hand on the mattress between us, palm up, about two inches from mine.

I lay awake looking at it until two.

On Wednesday Knox had a back piece that ran until nine.

So Inga came over with pad thai and a bottle of wine from a patient's grateful wife.

She came straight from a day shift, still in teal scrubs under her puffy coat, and dropped onto my couch.

"Tell me about my day," she said. "No, I'll tell you about my day. A man glued his hand to a snowmobile."

"How?"

"He was fixing the seat. He used the strong glue. Then he got an itch."

"Where?"

"Annika, I am a professional. I can't tell you that." She stabbed a noodle. "His nose. He glued his hand to his nose. And the nose was already glued to the snowmobile. His brother drove him in on a trailer."

I laughed so hard I got a noodle up my own nose, and she pointed at me with her chopsticks and said, "Look. Look how fun you are. Why are we pretending to be a cat?"

Then she held out her hand.

"Give me the thread."

"What thread?"

"Your secret moose diary. I know you're doing it. You've got a new tab open every time I see you, and you hide it like it's porn."

I gave her the laptop.

She pulled her feet up under her and read every post.
