Chapter 21: Is There Anything Else

The corridor behind the hall was long and cold, with concrete walls and a smell of floor polish.

Tommaso stood at the end of it with his hands in his pockets.

"I won't keep you," he said. "You have eight hundred people waiting for lunch."

"They can wait ten minutes."

He took one hand out of his pocket.

In it lay my wedding ring.

It looked smaller than I remembered, and it was dull from six months in the dark.

"I've carried it since the law firm," he said. "I told myself it was so you could ask for it back."

"I never asked."

"No. I understood that in the winter." He held it out flat on his palm. "I'm not giving it to you. You can throw it in the bay if you like. I only don't want to be the man who keeps it."

I looked at it for a long while.

"There's a pension fund for the dockers' widows," I said. "It takes donations at the harbour office. The gold would help."

"Then I'll take it there."

"Thank you."

He closed his hand. His shoulders came down a little.

Then, very quietly, he said it.

"Is there anything else?"

The corridor was empty. In the hall behind the doors, eight hundred people were pushing back their chairs.

It was the same question, in the same flat voice.

I had said it in a bedroom, with a box in my arms, to a man who was waiting for me to cry.

He was not waiting for anything now.

"Yes," I said. "There's one thing."

"Anything."
