Chapter 5: Salt on His Sleeve

On the fifth morning Gaetano Iovine asked me to meet him at the harbour.

He did not ask me to come back to work. He said he wanted to show me something about the containers.

I went because it was Friday, and on Friday the shipping line's four thousand euros a day began.

The Café Molo sat at the end of the old quay, with six iron tables and a view of the cranes.

Gaetano stood when he saw me.

He was tall, with short dark hair going grey at the temples, and a navy coat with salt dried white on the sleeves.

In four years I had never seen him anywhere but behind his desk.

"Donna Marisa."

"Just Marisa, for now."

"Marisa." He pulled out a chair. "Thank you for coming."

A waiter brought two espressos and went away.

Gaetano slid a folder across the table.

"Cement is cleared. The machine parts are not. Customs has a hold on them, and the clerk says he'll only talk to whoever signed the original order."

"That was me," I said. "Two years ago."

"I thought so."

I opened the folder, read the hold notice, and took a pen from my bag.

"He wants a stamp from the Agenzia office on Via Marina," I said. "Tell him the signature he's looking for is the same hand as the order from two years ago. He'll be shy about it. Ask after his daughter's exams."

I wrote the clerk's name on a napkin and the room number under it.
