Chapter 16: Sold Table
"I want to carry your ex-husband's table out of your house myself," Tanner said. "I want to set it down in front of the whole street and not say a word."
He stood in the kitchen doorway with his hands open and spoke slowly.
"And after, I want the porch swing. I want you on my lap, and these two where I can see them. I want one night where nobody is in a hurry."
"That's all?" I said.
"It's all I'm allowed to say before breakfast."
I got through the week on that.
The Saturday of the yard sale came in bright and cold.
Every house on our street had folding tables out on the lawn.
The tulip lady had a card table of her late husband's fishing lures, priced to move.
The man across the street sat in a lawn chair with his leaf blower across his knees.
At ten the white Buick turned the corner, slowly, behind a rented cargo van.
My ex-husband parked at the curb.
He had a woman with him in a quilted vest and white sneakers.
She got out of the van and looked at my house and then at her own hands.
"Britta," he said. "Good. It's Saturday week."
"You didn't call," I said.
"I'm here to get the table."
"I told you to call first. Bring a truck and two men."
"I have a van," he said.
"I see a van."
"It's my father's table."
"It's in the dining room," I said. "Come in and get it."
He looked past me.
The three of them had come down the porch steps and stood on my front walk in a row, Tanner in the middle.
Nobody had been told to.
My ex-husband took a breath through his nose.
"Girls like you always do this," he said, loud, for the street. "You find a crew and think they're yours. They're on the clock, Britta. They'll go when the clock does."
