Chapter 21: Tanner's Wall
Tanner's POV
I sat in my truck in her driveway at three in the morning with the engine off.
I had a key in my pocket, a brass one, cut for the new deadbolt in February.
I did not use it.
A key is for working hours, and this was not that.
The dining room light was on.
Her sister had left Wednesday at noon with an empty loaf pan and a hug that lasted too long.
Kou had gone home to his mother's.
Mikko had gone home to his roommate.
I had gone home to a room with a bed and a window, and lain on top of the blanket with my uncle's text on my chest, and not slept.
The front door opened.
She stood there in her robe and bare feet, with her hair loose, and did not say anything.
The porch light was behind her.
I remembered the first night, and how she had come out with a glass of wine and asked me if it was the truck.
I had said I was trying to go home.
It was not a good answer.
It was the only true one I had had then.
I got out of the truck and walked up the steps.
"I'm not trying to go home," I said.
"I can see that."
"Can I come in?"
"Come inside," Britta said.
I went in, and she shut the door and put her hand flat on my chest.
"I couldn't sleep either," she said. "I was in the dining room."
"Why?"
"Come and see."
She took my wrist and led me.
The dining room was dark except for the lamp on the floor.
Eggshell walls Mikko had rolled on in one day, the window, the empty place where the oak table had been, four chairs against the wall.
She went to the wall by the refrigerator.
