Chapter 4: The Glued Wolf

Catriona's POV

The grey truck was parked across from the school again on Thursday.

It had been there Monday and Tuesday, too.

Conall never got out.

He sat behind the wheel with both hands on top of it.

Tobin saw it before I did.

He stopped on the sidewalk in the brown boots Otis had bought him at the feed store, and stared at the pavement.

"He's here."

"I know."

"Tell him to go away."

"Do you want me to?"

Tobin thought about it, which was the worst part.

He was six years old, and he thought about it.

"I want you to tell him I don't want to talk," he said. "But I don't want him to go."

"I can do that."

"Okay." He walked up the school steps without looking back.

The teacher waved at me from the door.

I waved back, turned around, and crossed the street.

Conall rolled the window down before I reached it.

He looked like he had slept in the truck.

He probably had.

"Catriona."

"You have no claim here, Conall. This is a human town, and that's a human school."

"I know."

"Then why are you parked outside it?"

"I wanted to see him go in." He swallowed. "I wasn't going to get out. I'm not going to get out."

"He saw you."

"I figured."

"He says he doesn't want to talk to you, and he doesn't want you to go."

Conall closed his eyes.

When he opened them he looked like a man who had been hit hard and was waiting for the next one.

"I brought something," he said.

He reached across the seat and held up the two halves of the wooden wolf.
