Chapter 16: Town Hall
They cleared the Toledo dock floor for the vote and set out two hundred folding chairs.
Findlay and Fremont came in on company buses, in coats and thermal boots, with their lunches in plastic bags.
I counted heads from the side of the stage.
Two hundred and twelve, minus the night shift, plus the families who had come to see.
Colm Redfern stood at a podium that said REDFERN LOGISTICS in raised silver letters.
Nobody had asked him to bring the podium.
"I want to start with respect," he said.
He wore no tie, and his sleeves were rolled.
"You are the best cold-chain workforce in the Midwest."
"I'm offering to buy twenty percent of your company at a price you can take home."
"Seventy thousand dollars."
"Cash, in your hand, after the count."
A murmur went through the folding chairs.
I watched it move.
"Some of you have bad knees," Colm said.
"Some of you have a mortgage you've been paying for thirty years."
"I'm not asking you to love me."
"I'm asking you to take the money."
He talked for ten minutes.
He was good.
When he finished, there was applause, thin and hesitant, from the back rows.
